ABOUT THE SHOW

Lightscapes - Grand Ise Shrine

Lightscapes premieres Monday, June 21 on Discovery HD Theater at 7:30 AM ET / PT.

Lightscapes is an episodic, half-hour experiential television series airing on Discovery HD Theater that captures famous buildings and landscapes around the world as they are transformed by stunning, large-scale lighting displays.

Captured in stunning 4K HD with both real-time and time-lapse cinematography, the unique Lightscapes visuals are accompanied by an instrumental soundtrack, drawing inspiration from the highly acclaimed feature film Baraka and the HD Theater television series, Sunrise Earth.

The first episode was filmed at Japan's most sacred Shinto site, The Grand Ise Shrine, on November 3rd, as part of re-dedication ceremonies for Uji Bridge (rebuilt in 20 years cycles, starting 1,300 years ago), which coincided with "Bunka no hi", the holiday that celebrates Culture & the Arts.

Subsequent episodes are being filmed at various locations in Europe, America, and throughout Asia.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Lightscapes features the work of the renowned Japanese artist, Akira Hasegawa, and his unique "D-K" art form that uses light to create visual masterpieces.

With either natural landscapes or an interesting architectural structure as his canvas, Akira projects large-scale, abstract-painting-like images that create stunning “lightscapes” which slowly transform every second.

Using his own proprietary software, Akira materializes cosmic noise originating outside the Earth’s atmosphere and converts it into 1 million digital art images which are randomly projected at 30 frames per second while utilizing an alpha blend to create a truly unique visual experience.

The combined scale and subtle transformations of these lightscapes are perceived by the eye in a manner similar to watching a beautiful sunset, and are particularly fascinating to watch when shown in time-lapse.

Over the last several years, Akira’s D-K installations have been seen by hundreds of thousands of people at nearly 100 different locations around the world, ranging from sacred landscapes and both modern and traditional buildings in his native Japan, to the slopes of the ancient Acropolis in Greece and the heart of modern technology in Silicon Valley.
